Try addressing them by name. First name if you are familiar or by Mr., Mrs, Miss, or Ms. If not a close friend. I am sure you would not like a label.

You address by names, it doesn't matter which ethnic you are, anyone can be the "N" word, it has a definition. Now day anyone can be called the "N" word and yes anyone would be offended. So call God "God", Jesus "Jesus", " Mary "Mary" and African Americans by their names. So stop dwelling on others. What do they call "YOU"? could it be the "N" word or crazy. Stop hating, and stay out of the tanning booths, and the sun, trying to be something you're not and want to be, "yes", you know you wish you were "African American" , a.k.a "BLACK", or any other person of color.

I don't know why the world is so confused as how to relate to us. African-American has been used for about 20-30 years. Did someone not get the memo? Have they not checked thier e-mail?
We have been called blacks by colonial europeans and it is a term that some identify without a problem and to some it is offensive maybe because of the tone of the speaker or just because thier preference maybe based on thier complexion, who knows. Like some women are offended by being called a "Chick" or a "Broad". Its thier personal preference. Like referring to Asians "Yellow-faces". I could see how they would be pissed off but some may not care. It is just better to refer to them as Asian and if they want to refer to each other as yellow and I am NOT allowed to do it without offense then thats the way it is.
On top of that, blacks are dealing with a color complex when it comes to our complexions. Few of us have been "black for about 100 years but our knee-jerk reaction to being compared to anything very dark because it seems in the eyes of other non-blacks it is the opitimy of evil and backwardness as imposed on us by colonial expierence so we want to distance ourselves from it. I would say to refer to the individual as they prefer to be identified but African-American would be a suitable catch-all reference.

From expierence( how every you spell it) i have noticed that when you are trying to talk to an BLACk person and you are of diffrent race you let there race go and just say "excuse me," there is no reason for you to say African American just an "exuse me" thats goes for all races. Don't look at the race of the women or man just look at there shoes.

You address a black person the same way you address anyone else, "Excuse me, sir?", etc. If you must mention their heritage, I think what you used is proper, African American. I have an adopted black son, and I am white. I prefer people call him by his name, and me by mine!

How about addressing them with "hello". Or "nice to meet you".
Or "Nice day Mrs. ____"
Point is in addressing a person you have no real need to use their ethnicity. You don't say "Hey Afro-American, how's it going."
If you mean what do you call them behind thier backs, well .....

it is a man, you adress them as SIR, or MR. (last name)
if it a women, you address them as ma'am or the ms,mrs, miss ( last name)
if you are freinds, you address them by their first name
if they wish to be addressed in another way, they will tell you.
I mean, do you want someone calling you
"hey, euro-american, come here"
or more like
hey, bob, come here
or excuse me sir, would you mind coming this way for a moment please?
(i'm a white guy btw)
