It depends on the Modem. If the only only output is USB, then you need to use ICS (Internet Connection Sharing.) You Buy a Crossover LAN Cable and plug the Laptop into the PC (It must be a Crossover Type.)
Next go to START and Help and Support on the right. Type in "Internet Connection Sharing" and follow the instructions. If both are running XP there should be no problem. The only thing is that your Mums PC must be running for you to get a connection and your connection will be slower than the options below.
If the Modem has both USB and a LAN Cable socket (RJ45) then you have several options.
A / Plug a standard LAN Cable into the RJ45 and into your laptop and leave your mum plugged into the USB port.
B / Plug an Ethernet Switch into the LAN Socket and then connect both your Mums PC and Your Laptop to the Switch.
C / Plug a Wireless Bridge into the RJ45 socket and connect via Wireless LAN (WiFi).
I have 2 Laptops and 2 PCs running on "option B" however I have 1 Switch downstairs and 1 Switch upstairs to accommodate faster connections between computers on the system. This allows any of the computers to printout on any of the printers in the house (Printer Sharing) and also to share document folders.

A wireless router from somewhere like Argos. We recently got a BT outfit and was surprised that the main PC is still connected to it by wire, so the only one that needs the "dongle" is your laptop. The help from BT was fantastic too, which was just as well as the written instructions were unintelligible !
