NO you do not have to have a midwife...though its sure nice to have one!!!!!!

What do they do? They... midwife attends childbirth, provides support during labor and delivery, and supervises the general care of women and children directly after birth. The term midwife, meaning "with a woman," was first recorded in 1300. However, accounts dating to the second century confirm the role of midwives in the birthing process. Contemporary midwives provide care to women during normal pregnancies and deliveries and call on obstetricians or other physicians if complications develop. Midwifery is a professionally regulated field.

Midwifes are there to help with decisions about the birth, help with exercise during the pregnancy and can be there for you when your doctor is with another patient. A midwife isn't needed, one is usually appointed to you or referred by the doctor

Most babies are delivered by the doctor still in the hospital, however some couples opt for the alternate birthing centers to cut costs or for a more family orientated birth. Most midwives are nurse prationers and can deliver the baby if no complications arrive. if they do the doctor is called and the woman is taken to the hospital this is usually offered to low risk paitients who have had no previous complications. you can still go the regular route if you want as your doctor has to give consent and clearance for the other way. Talk to your doctor about what is best for your girlfriend or wife.

No, you don't have to have one. You can stay with an OB/GYN or have both.

A midwife is a non-doctor who specializes in the care of pregnant women and delivering babies.
