India might some day have a large aggregate economy, but the US was in a unique position during the 20th to become a "Superpower".
The US didn't just have the world's largest economy, it's ties to Europe brought it into WWI and WWII; Europe's savagery and lack of opportunities brought many bright, productive, and important immigrants to the US; US culture was embraced by most of the world; the "universal" language of English happened to be the native tongue of the US; and US lead the world in invention, innovation, and business practices.
I think all those thing went in to making the US a "Superpower", and I don't see India ever replicating such an influence. Not China either.

I agree with lost in space, you guys are nuts on here, only willing to hear the doom and gloom.I can tell you this and this is a fact,China's economy is pretty much a big fat zero without the USA,we may have been the Catalyst that drove the global market down but they are all looking at us to pull them out of it,not China not Russia the good ole USA so jump off of the band wagon and do something smart like invest now while the market is low because we will never see prices like this again and when it bounces back(it will I promise)you will be happy you didn't stuff money under your mattress waiting for the new world order LOL

Ive just completed a development course at uni and i must say India will never be a world power... Its economy is a dualistic economy (2 economies in one) ie you have 700 million people in agriculture and the remainder in high technology. The problem is that you need a bridge between this high technology (ie nuclear power) and agriculture, that is you need industries with variable capital coefficients so that the machines in these industries can be modified to use more labour and absorb the labour surplus from agriculture, once the labour surplus is removed from agriculture then that sector is forced to modernise with the rest of the economy (ie as happened in Meiji Japan with their textile industry diffusing the steel and steam engine industry technology to agriculture). but the british destroyed Indias textile industry as it was much more compeditive then the british one, so India had no industry to diffuse the high technology.... Now india is adopting a strategy of open markets FDI, unregulated finacial system (this strategy will fail! NO country has ever industrialised through free trade!) again look at every country that has indusreialised since 1914 (there is only 4 of them and they have all had regulated export driven economies
