I had fish for years and they remembered me when I came home from school. If they had a 3-second memory, they would have had a better memory than Ron Regan! Even a snail in my aquarium would crawl over to the glass where I was standing when I came home. And a snail has a lower intelligence than a fish!!

I knew a psychologist that studied fish in uni. They have far greater memory than three seconds, as some have noticed, they remember motions leading to feeding, or as in the case of the silver dollar, being isolated for treatments.
It may explain why some fish never are caught, they may have learned and remembered, either a close call, or perhaps seen another caught. Who knows at this point the extent to which a fish may learn. That is still uncharted territory.
As far as me, what was your question?

Not only do goldfish have a good long term memory, they also have a sense of the time of day. An experiment was made where goldfish pressed levers to be fed, and the goldfish learned which lever to press for food. When the lever was made to only activate at a certain time of day, the fish after a while stopped trying to press the button at other times.

No. Most people who keep fish will tell you that their fish will gather in the corner at the top of the tank, when you go near them. They remember where the feeding area is.

I have a Silver Dollar fish that I had to treat with antibiotics once. He was never afraid until I had to put him in another tank and treat him. He hated this. That was two years ago and he still seems afraid now when I open the lid. I think he still remembers the incidence.

I agree with Zoeksalami... I watched that episode and fish can actually learn and have long term memory. They were pretty smart fishy at the end of their training...
