It changes my home page to "Gophersearch" and sends all kind of pop-up windows (lottery, dating, xxx, etc). Also, it creates links within words. For example, from the word "Add", it will hyperlink "Ad" to send you to another page.

Your PC is infected with a browser hijacker, use these scans to remove it.

All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free.

AVG Removes I-Worm/Stration · BackDoor.Generic3.GBB and .GBC · Worm/Generic.FX · Exploit.WMF

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

I suggest that you try to carryout system restore to a day previous to the day when there was no virus. The problem is likely to be solved. Then,You insatll a standard antivirus soft ware such as Norton, AVG , Avast ( free antivirus software and Ad-aware, Ewido ( free spyware removers). You can download free softwares at

The easiest way is to run System Restore, a small feature that many have not heard of. Basically, it will return your computer to how it was before you performed a specific action (such as installing a program with your Malware).

Go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore, then follow the prompts to restore it to the date you want. You will not remove any files or data (such as word documents), only the programs and settings you changed.

Your computer will then need to be reset. Please note that these instructions are for Windows XP (Home or Professional) only and will not work with previous versions.

Go to Symantec.com and search for "gopher search" and it will guide you through ridding you computer of it. Sounds more like spyware than a virus really.
