I am nine weeks pregnant with my first. I have just received my first hospital appoitment and it isn't until mid jan (that will make me about 17 weeks). Is it normal not to have seen anyone (other than quick chat with doc) until 17 weeks? I thought first scans were done at about 12.

Maybe the letter is for later tests then although it gives no detail about what will happen other than to tell me to bring a sample with me. It's a mystery! Maybe i'm jumping the gun and should be getting another appointment soon

hi please read this you need to chat with your family doctor there is a very important scan that needs to be done between around 12 and 14 weeks it is called a nuchal translucency scan it is an ultra sound and blood test on the same day and is used to detect abnormalities and down syndrome you can have this test at many different ultrasound places not just your hospital and the receptionist at your doctors surgery should know where you can go to get it bulk billed if u have not got the money it is very important go to your doctor Monday and get an ultrasound referral and make the appointment it is although normal to not be seen by the hospital until 17 weeks i was about 20 weeks before they could fit me in... if you have a good doctor that you trust that has a Doppler (a type of microphone that can hear your baby's heart beat through the stomach) ask her/him about doing share care it is easier you don't need to go to the hospital as much good luck with everything hope all goes well for you congratulations Danielle

Dont panic i'm pretty sure the first scan if no complications is between 12-16 weeks so it could just be really busy and they've just managed to fit you in. You can always go to the doctor and request an earlier scan if you think there is anything wrong. Have you seen the midwife yet? You should have contact with her and she should be able to put your mind at rest if you have any issues.
Good luck xx

I know what you mean. I feel like i hardly have any contact with the doctor, and apparently its completely normal. If you are young and healthy then its not unusual to just have one scan throughout the whole pregnancy at around 20 weeks. Just keep to your appointments with the midwife, and try to relax. Best wishes for your next 29 weeks.

your first scan (dating scan) should be scheduled at about 10-12 weeks - you will not usually be seen at the hospital until after then unless you have problems but should be seeing your midwife before then to get this scanned booked, arrange booking blood tests and to get checked over.

ive found it can be about funding ,staff availability......esp at xmas
11-14 weeks is the usual time
you should insist that you are seen before xmas-they are usually less-relaxed about first-time mothers,go to the gp or antenatal clinic, get upset, tears are good!
for starters it isnt nice to be hanging on and all being well
please God
you will have a scan picture to show off at xmas

You will be booked into see your midwife soon so ask at the Doctors when you should see her. I can't remember how many weeks you need to be before you see her about 11 or something. Ring them on Monday and ask when you go to see her.

if u are in uk, then it is right as they have changed it all now, and u dont see midwife until u have had your 18-20wk scan, they only scan at 12 wk now for dating, number of babies and if other pregnancies have gone wrong.
