It is hard to say without knowing more about the age of the baby, any history of maltreating other babies and the circumstances which cause this child to have been placed on the "at risk" register. Removing a child during the lactation period can only, one would imagine, aggravate any mental problems. The powers of the child protection services seem to supervene the right to family life and they can remove a child for 72 hours by making out a good case before a magistrate for doing so. Perhaps the mother can arrive at an arrangement to see her baby for feeding purposes and also to express milk to maintain the supply. I think that if she showed that degree of devotion, it could only stand her in good stead as a caring mother in the eyes of the authorities. The trouble is, the more upset she becomes over this issue, the less stable she is going to appear to those assessing her. I just hope that they can come up with a sensible solution so that assessment can take place while she maintains contact.

I'm afraid that where there are genuine child protection concerns, the baby's safety has to come first. Breastfeeding is generally best for babies, however if there are child protection concerns sometimes this has to override everything else. There are some mother-and-baby psychiatric units where breastfeeding can be continued, however it sounds like the mother is in the community? If the baby is being removed for a short assessment period, the mother could express milk using her hand or a breast pump to keep her milk supply going until the baby is returned - unless the mother is on medication which would be bad for the baby.

She can express the milk and put it into bottles for the baby to be fed. Any mental health issues might mean Mum is on anti psychotic medication at the end of the day the baby has to come first sad for Mum but BABY COMES FIRST
