Depends on shopkeeper, if they don't accept pennies then they can't have payment. Best bet is get some money bags from bank and change them there yourself...or post office.

as long as its legal tender technically they have to accept it but the shop i worked in used to get allot of homeless people so we put a limit of £5 small change per transaction cause it took so long to count

Pennies are legal tender in America, they should accept any and all. A friend of mine was upset with a supplier and paid his bill of $144.00 in pennies. They accepted them, with dismay !
