That is what french call : "Humour anglais", which would mean something like the "english way of joking" ... i can't find the words to translate it. By the way I love the English comedies, and the way English people joke ! ;-)

We do sometimes, and maybe we have a dry sense of humour, and laughing at your own jokes is not cool.

It's as much a cultural aspect than anything. No one likes a smart a r s e laughing at his/her own joke. Apart from anything, the humour comes partially from the delivery and there is nothing worse than half hearing a joke because the teller is laughing his head off before he gets to the punchline. Most English humour is intelligent and dry, lots of foreigners, especially Americans don't understand it.

We don't laugh (generally) as I guess it makes it a more subtle comedy, the comedy of laughing at life without having to blatantly tell your audience you're trying be funny and telling them that they should laugh (like lots of canned laughter comedies) What I find funny will be different to what you find funny. So, if you and I were watching a British comedy and laughed at different points, that's great because we're enjoying it the same, just not being told when the makers of the show want us to laugh!

What nonsense, we have 40 million people in England all with different nuances in our sense of humour. Some people stay straight laced when telling jokes while others, myself included, can't stop giggling. It all depends on the indiviuals personality.

Either way British humour is the finest in the world.

Shall I call Posh for you?" Beckham says, "Why do i choose help?" The receptionist says, "It says on your profile which you're a ineffective wan*er."
