No, they are not better. While they often have lower tar and chemicals than traditional cigarettes, they also don't usually have filters. I started smoking clove cigarettes many years ago in college, and then, since they were not easy to get (i.e. at a bar) I ended up switching to menthol. Luckily I never got addicted, and quit smoking totally a long time ago, but it could have led to problems. I would recommend chewing herbal gum instead!! The article below has a lot of helpful information.

The herbal cigarettes are still bad for your lungs. However, most of the herbal cigarettes do not have as much tar or the horrible chemicals that are put into cigarettes (like rat poisoning etc). To a certain degree they are better for your lungs than normal cigarettes, but in the long run they will still harm ya with cancer, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and just all around lung problems. Best thing to do is break the habit and find something else to occupy your mouth preoccupation.

Herbal cigarettes won't hurt you, even if you do inhale them. If you don't inhale, why not just puff on real cigarettes? The only reason to smoke herbal cigarettes is so that you can smoke insane amounts of them without getting sick.

Any smoke from any source that you inhale is harmful to your lungs. Why would you want to hurt yourself? Just don't do it.
