It is probably an overdrive button I have one on my "05 focus. It gives more tourqe. Would only recomend using it at speeds under 45 mph.

If it is an automatic on the floor, the button could be a Park lock out button. You should have to depress this button to move the shifter out of Park. It is there to help prevent children from pulling the car into drive unexpectedly.

It may also be an overdrive "Off" switch , if so you should see light come on in the dash to indicate this.

That would be to turn OFF your overdrive - You would only use that if towing or to lower your gears... Otherwise it will default on.
(it is a ford system)
