Pretty story, but genetically impossible. Cats and dogs have a common ancestor, sure, but so do cats and people, and dogs and mice, and every single mammal that's around. Cats and dogs belong to different taxonomical families - they have different chromosome nubers and different genes on different chromosomes that mean that no such thing as pittens or kuppies could be produced. Yes, horses and donkeys can breed to produce a STERILE offspring - the mule or hinny, but that's because they're extremely closely related members of the equus family with very similar behaviour/courtship. Cats and dogs aren't even that close.
And puppies couldn't be born from implantation in a cat's womb - the DNA would be rejected by the mother as completely foreign. Its being tried between camelids (alpacas/llamas etc) and an embryo doesn't implant even between these two very closely related species, so there's no way we can implant two such diverse species as a cat and dog, who are as closely related as a human and a lemur, or a horse and a rhinocerous.

This is crazy! Those babies look like puppies because they ARE puppies! It is rather common for a mother animal to nurse another type of baby. I can't believe anyone would believe this! Of course the officials are checking it out and testing the blood to prove what they are. Just wait and see, the proof will come!

It's a hoax as different species can't cross breed, even if the dog did mate with a cat the cat would not become pregnant.
Having said that have you seen the puppies on Jordan?

I am sure you are right
It is not unusual, for a cat to foster new born animals,
of another species , dogs will do that as well
However, i am positive that the story of a cat, actually being mated with a dog and producing puppies, is not correct .
You are right !
dogs and cats ar not a closely related species

(Sigh) So many ignorant answers...
Yes, SOME CLOSELY RELATED species can interbreed, like horses and donkeys, dog and wolves, lions and tigers, domestic cats and African wild cats etc.
No, cats and dogs can NOT interbreed. They're not even from the same genus; they're not even from the same family. The highest classification level they share is on the order level, both being from the order Carnivora.
Caladria gave a great answer.
Tumblebabe, you're not much of a vet if you don't know these basic things.

There's no way, it's just a hoax. They're completely different species, and cats and dogs who are domesticated mate all the time. Wouldn't it happen everywhere.
That's like a human giving birth to a gorilla. Except even LESS likely.

Well I have no idea about those kittens and/or puppies. But I do remember seeing something on PBS (Nova?) that they had a common saber-toothed ancestor. It was a show about how mammals took over after the ice-age. The picture in that link just looked like puppies to me, they could be held up next to any cat, I would like to see more proof.

You will notice that there were no scientists involved in this report. Anecdotal stories abound, vanishingly few are scientifically proven. We had a dog that had a puppy that died, it adopted a kitten and nursed it and raised it, which sounds like a probable scenario for this report.

The only way this could happen would be if canine embryos were implanted AND managed to attach and develop in a feline uterus. Maybe somebody has tried it, but I'm not sure what the point would be.
