I've just had the mirena coil fitted (Thursday morning) and I'm still experiencing severe cramps, like period pains. Is this normal? I'm really worried as they're so painful and thought the cramps would only last 24 hours after the fitting. If anyone could help or share their experience I'd be very grateful. Thanks.

hi i would go back to the doc
i hada coil fitted by my gp about 3 yeayrs ago and it perforated my uterus. dr kept telling me that it was just settling in but i knew it wasnt just that. cramps turned to stabbing pain then infection set in and i had disgusting discharge and severe pain.
still told it was settling in!! ten days lateri was rushed for emergency surgery and three ops later and after two years of severe pain my obgynae consultant finally got me sorted.
listen to your own body you know it better than anyone and if your not happy go get checked!!!

Hi, I wouldn't worry to much about the cramps yet. I had Mirena put in about a year ago. I had pretty bad cramps for about 3-4 days. I have not had any children before, so the doctor said my cramps would last longer due to the fact that my cervix had never been dilated. I love the Mirena now. I have only had 2 periods since getting it over a year ago. I did have to have the strings trimmed in the beginning because they bothered my husband. But other than that, it has been wonderful. I would just wait out the cramps right now and if they don't let up in the next few days, call the doctor back and have it checked. Good Luck!

Hi, Must admit I don't have the Mirena version (I wanted the one without the hormones) But I do have the coil fitted (for the last 2 yrs) and it is great, slightly crampy stomach on fitting, only a short twinge (take Ibuprofen 1/2 hr before your appt) two slightly crampy periods afterwards, and now absolutely brill don't know it's there, would definately recommend it. Hope this helps p.s I had trouble with the pill beforehand , and prefer to know that any hormones circulating are my own, much better now than when on pill , I used to have constant headaches, never realised they were down tio the pill until I came off !

I had the mirena coil for about three years and it did take a long while to settle down. About a year! I had it taken out as it didn't really agree with me( too much progesterone). However, I have friends who think it is the best think since sliced bread and are on their second one. Give it a chance to settle and make itself at home! Good Luck!

had the coil fitted in june
I can't remember if I had bad cramps or not but i did have periods for a couple of months after and then nothing. I did experience headaches but i do not know if they were related or not. It seems to be ok now although when i went back to get it checked the doc found cysts on my cervix and i am still waiting to go to the gyno to see about it. keep in touch and let me know how you get on but i think everything will be ok.

It shouldn't be that painful. I had mine fitted and the only thing I experienced was a little bleeding and a funny feeling which couldn't even be called ache.
Go back and have it checked out. One of the most common mistakes they make is pinching which is painful and can cause infections.

not a very nice experience, i got mine fitted two years ago and can still remember that pain it is normal and every body is diff rent. the pains should start dulling down but they may last up to a week ( i know that seems like ages away). i bleed for nearly two weeks after mine. hope you feel better a hot bath, some chocolate, and a hot watter bottle that always helps, and your aloud to feel sorry for yourself because it is a horribe experience and i have a kid. take care
