I don't necessarily agree with just "giving" them money, but I do think it's essential that they have some.
Explanation ...
Adults don't get anything for free, they have to work for it. I don't think children should be treated much differently. How else will they learn the value of work, and the self confidence and self respect that comes with earning? My children receive weekly allowances, based on their chores. If they don't do their chores, they don't get their allowance. If they do their chores, but not up to par, they don't get their full allowance ... I deduct for the shabby work. Their chores are based on their age range, and what they're capable of doing around the house to help out.
As for the money issue, kids need to have money in order to learn how to be responsible with it. Budgeting is just as important for a child, as is learning how to save up for something they really want. These lessons will prove invaluable when they leave home and venture out on their own.
Also, it grants them a measure of independence to have their own money to blow on stupid things that aren't necessities.

I think as long as they do chores for it...I think it's a great experience for them...I use the rule of 1/2 ther age as a rule....eg: if the child is 12..$6.00 is given. That may not seem alot...but it teaches them the value of the hard earned dollar.

Please give...i come from a not so financially good background and can tell u how painful it is when other kids have money and you do not;
just ensure the kid knows what is the ideal spend....keep a limit teaches him/her to plan financials right from an young age.

we can try to buy them what thley need instead of teaching them to spend right from the youong age. it is better to teach them the old, real and meaningful phrase waste not want not so that they can understand the value of money and try to cultivate the hlabit of savings.

it all depends on the way the children's upbringing. if the guidence from the parents is good...the pockedmoney is used good way. otherwise, it would be spent on other unwanted elements, like smoking, drinking or betting..or even prostitution.
