Because your nature is good, therefore when you are not good you are not being true to yourself. When you are not true to yourself, you become unhappy. When you become unhappy, you make other people unhappy.
It is a rather simple question with a rather simple answer. But many people do not believe they are fundamentally, by nature, good, and thus they struggle to rely on "objective" answers (God, philosophy of ethics, etc) in order to explain why they should contradict or manipulate their perceived nature.
Fundamentally, the question of being "good" relies upon, depends upon, one's basic assumptions about their actual nature. If that nature is percieved to be not-good (i.e., neutral or evil) then they must/will look to outside answers, to exterior sources of good. But looking for goodness outside yourself is a contradiction of sorts, because what within you would seek a source of goodness if your nature were not already, in some fundamental sense, good? If one believes "being good" is merely a kind of social disguise which has utility because it grants you what you want, then this isn't being good, but is really just being "bad" or evil while pretending to be good, and hasn't fundamentally addressed the question.
This is precisely why the only real domain of human experience that can provide the answer lies in the spiritual pursuit of finding one's self. The further one pursues it, the closer they come to the self-evident truth that they are by nature, inherently, good. Once this is understood, the question becomes simple, and the answer becomes simple.

I think that we are intelligent enough to fully understand empathy and consequence. If you were to do a bad thing you know you would get punished if caught and you know what it would feel like if it happened to you. In my case I would feel guilt because I understood the whole situation instead of just selfishly thinking of myself and then learn from it to become a better person for my own satisfaction and happiness.

What a wonderful question!!
One should be good for one's own good. A good person is more likely to have peace of mind, certainly to a higher degree compared to those who indulge in evil thoughts or action. Being good is a way to reduce the perennial feeling of insecurity one suffers from in this world - good thoughts and actions have a strange equation with a restful and satiated mind.

Treat others as you want to be treated. Because whether you believe in God (& therefore Heaven & Hell & retribution, punishment for sins & reward for good deeds) or you have a conscience that guides you or you just submit to the universal law of karma, what goes around comes around. Kindness will come back to you a hundredfold, cruelty will inevitably come back to bite you in the butt.

Hey Lola,
Because you get what you give. If you give bad you get bad. If you ask nice, I respond nice. You win and I win.
Making a better world begins with each of us.
Of course, there is the Dark side, if you like being mean, you can expect people to try getting back at you.

"Good" is a relative term. What is good for you isn't good for me. So if you are good person for one , there sure might be one in the crowd to whom you aren't so good... So why should you be a good person?
Just be yourself! Does that sound so bad?

I think from your own personality. If you are nice you is because you have a goodheart...if you are cold and cruel you will act in that way.
