I have recently had a problem with fruit flies in my kitchen and dining room. I think I have eliminated the original source, a green pepper that didnt make it to the garbage can, but that was 6 days ago and the problem is getting worse. I have also gone through and cleaned the kitchen top to bottom. Any advice or ideas would be helpful.

Fruit flies lay eggs in the juice that exudes from aging fruit. You've thrown away the green pepper, but the flies you see were born and raised in the residue.

Without a suitable rotting piece of fruit, they will go away on their own, but in future you're going to want to put fruit in places (like a straw basket) that won't allow the exudate to pool and nurture the flies. You'll want to wipe the container the green pepper was in with something ; if you intend to use it for fruit again, I'd use white vinegar, but if it's not something that you intend to use for fruit again ( a decorative porcelain piece, for example) you can use Pine-Sol or another solvent to destroy any remaining residue.

If you have, say, a basket of apples on the counter, you'll want to make sure that you toss any aging fruit because the presence of one rotting piece will hasten deterioration of the remaining food. This is a case where one rotten apple will truly spoil the barrel.

Do you have any areas of standing water? Many times this is where fruit flies gather. If you have any liquor bottles, syrup, or flavorings like vanilla around they may also be feeding on the area around the caps where the sugary product gathers. . I suggest cleaning all surfaces again with a bleach product, and checking under areas like stoves and refridgerators to see if there is some sort of sugery substance they are feeding on.

Try this:
Put some red wine or cider vinegar in a glass. Cover the glass with platic wrap which you have punched several holes in. The flies will be attracted to the liquid, crawl through the holes, and drop into the liquid, drowning themselves.

Fruit flies are really tough - they multiply exponentially. Try setting out a few bowls of cider vinegar. The flies are attracted to the sweetness. Clean your sink drain as well.
