Divorce rate in Australia in around 40%. Meaning, about 40 percent of marriages can be expected to end in divorce. Adding a small fraction for marriage breakdowns which are never formalised by divorce,it is estimated that about 43 per cent of marriages end in separation within 30 years of the marriage.
Divorce rate in Australia stands at around 3 divorces per 1000 marriages. Census records show that more than 55,000 divorces were granted in 2001. During the same period around 103,000 marriages were registered.
People divorce for many reasons but i do believe that a huge contribution to divorce is financial strain on marriages, trying to pay your mortgage and raise kids on minimum wages... it takes its toll.

Not sure of the actual rate - I heard 40% somewhere, and the figure seems to be in the right ball park.
As for my reason for seeking a divorce (which is still in the works)? Because for all my best intentions, I was emotionally and verbally abused. Despite my efforts to try and 'fix' whatever was wrong I ended up being crushed in a way that I don't want to relive. (Trust me, this wasn't a "once only thing" and I was in a position that wasn't good for my well being.) At the end it all, she decided to leave and it was less painful for me to let her go. (So much so that my family commented the very next day that I looked like a weight had lifted off me.)
I'm not sure mine is a common reason, but it might have a collection of reasons in the tale. Incompatibility, abuse, growing apart, financial pressures - I think people just cite "irreconcileable differences" to avoid reopening the wounds. (I'm still edgey whenever my ex- and I are in contact...)
