The embryonic heart starts beating 22 days after conception, or about five weeks after the last menstrual period, which by convention we call the fifth week of pregnancy. The heart at this stage is too small to hear, even with amplification, but it can sometimes be seen as a flickering in the chest if an ultrasound is done as early as four weeks after conception.
After the 9th or 10th week after your last menstrual period, you might be able to hear your baby's heartbeat at your prenatal appointment. Whether you actually hear the heartbeat at 9 or 10 weeks depends partly on luck-the instrument must be placed at just the right angle. It also depends on the position of your uterus, and if you're slim or heavy. By the 12th week, the heartbeat can usually be heard consistently, using the Doppler instrument for amplification.

Ok, first don't stress, it is completely normal. I had an ultrasound at 4 weeks and we couldn't even see the sac, the only time I saw it was the day before my miscarriage, but that is beside the point. Your HCG levels are awesome for being as far along as you are, and as long as they are doubling and your progesterone is good, you'll be fine. Your HCG levels need to be at least 1600 before you can see they baby and the heartbeat. Most doctors wait until your about 7-8 weeks pregnant, because everyone's HCG levels are different. MIne were only at 75 when I was 4 weeks, but from what it sounds like your going to be fine, the baby is going to be fine, and just because you only saw the sac doesn't mean anything bad. If your HCG levels aren't doubling, then it's a cause for concern, but until then, I wouldn't stress. Good luck

I could see my baby's heartbeat in the ultrasound at my 9 week appointment, and then I heard it today at 13 weeks.

It's between six and seven weeks (you can see it, but you can't hear it until a few weeks later). If there is not a heartbeat detected at seven weeks, that's usually cause for concern.
