What is the reality? Would it bother you all that much? I ask as I noticed that younger men tend to back off, but that older men are more likely not to mind.

Dating a woman with a child means added responsibility in terms of playing some kind of role in the child's life, so you need to be prepared for this kind of responsibility. There's also the fact that the dad of the child may still carry a torch for the woman and might use the child as an excuse to start meddling in the relationship. It can get comlicated so it's worth thinking about it seriously before getting invloved. Older men tend to be mature and are more likely not to mind especially if they already have a child or two themselves.

If someone is going to share his life with you, he has to look at "the whole package" - if he's not prepared to change his lifestyle to accomodate children, it's a negative - don't forget that he could consider other things as well, however profound or shallow (religion,race,IQ,profession........)
A lot of these things might sound like some sort of discrimitaion, but if a guy tends to find short, blonde, blue eyed girls attractive this is not a rationally calculated decision, it's just "the way he his".

I'm sure women go through the same sorta process.

she would simply be deleted off the options list.
no man contemplates the complications involved with anything but a healthy dose of misapprehension.
i have seen my brother become a logdger in his own house because his single mother partner will not relinquish/share some of the parental authority to set boundaries to be obeyed.
if you partner doesnt do this youre a lodger, not a parent.

having said all the above, i think it would be far easier if the kid was under 5.

i agree that younger men do tend to step back, but not all of them, i know a guy who took on his gf kids and they get on really well, i think it is down to the individual guy.

It depends on what "Man" you attract. Speaking as a young man myself i wouldn't mind if the woman i'm interested in has a child or not.

I suppose older men probably don't mind that much, younger men will back off unless you give them time and ease them into the situation.

Surely it's a consideration to the child, rather than a commitment issue? You have two people to let down, rather than just one.

I don't think it bothers me though.
