i think that part of the reason people dont seem to take the problem of litter seriously is because of the flavour/sound of the word itself. litter has links with cute cats and sounds almost like little.
my word is a combination of plastic and junk, and is a word you can put some dislike and vehemence into the actual saying of the word.
now try saying litter vehemently....see my point? its such a polite inconsequential word.
does anyone want to try to popularise this word?

i know it sounds like plaque...havent you noticed that english is full of words with more than one meaning.
also plaque, that white scummy cheesy deposit between your teeth only adds to the foul connotations of the word and adds an extra rancid stinky dustbin flavour to the word..which is exactly appropriate.

Hmmm...I never thought about it before but you're right a litter of kittens is adorable & little is a cute word. Plak sounds much more harsh. It's like plaque which is just plain gross (& thus gets the message across). Of course I'm kind to the environment & I never litter (er, I mean, I never PLAK...) myself. Words that end in K usually are kind of harsh. (Well I'm thinking of one in particular that starts with an "f" & which I usually yell while driving or when I bang my leg, or the odd time during a particularly intense amorous moment...) maybe your term will catch on & take on different connotations: "Go plak yourself!"

:)

Good luck with your new word!
