i dont really get why people that claim to be okay with the sexuality of themselves and others need to put the fact that they are socialy acceptable on a button. its kind of like "i have friends that are are gay, but dont worry I'M not".

I think part of it may be to keep others from questioning their sexuality--in other words, it's their own insecurity about how others perceive them. To me it seems that heterosexual men are very concerned that they not be seen as gay, even by accident. Because two women together is often more accepted by heterosexual society (a popular heterosexual male fantasy), I think you won't hear women say this as often. Also, I think women are generally more gay tolerant. Perhaps that's another reason they don't feel the need to separate themselves verbally by the "I'm not" tag.

In some cases I think you re right, "some of my best friends are black" In other cases it is the best attempt of breeders to try to say they understand something they could not ever "get", lastly, how a person acts towards me is a lot more important than any button on any lapel. No ones lapel is big enough to hold all the buttons to describe who they are, or what they think.

They are most likely saying this, because they don't want to be hit on. If you have gay friends, you have a pretty good chance you are something to. So they are telling people this, to save the gay or les the trouble of not hitting on them. I have done my fair share of hitting on, so I understand when they say this, it is like ok note to self, DON'T hit on str8 person. Even when drunk hold your self back, haha.

I've used the expression when responding to gay-themed surveys or questions, just in case someone likes my answer and wants to check out my profile. Don't want to mislead anyone!

I also use "Not that there's anything wrong with it." I just think it's funny.
