Normally doing an 'erase' on a DVD or CD regains the full disk space but you can use 'format' instead of 'erase' to be sure.

yep man, the full size of the disc is not affected by the operations write and erase, more you're writing you're using the free space on the disk, if it's cd (~650mb) in a dvd (~4.5gb), and when you're erasing the overflow data becomes a 0 data again, making then clean and full size re-writable.

Yup.

Try a memory stick- much easier to use.
