Both are equally bad as the other, and unfortunately where there is physical abuse, there is usually some form of verbal abuse, or vise versa.

While it is true that physical abuse injuries do heal, but the some injuries do leave physical scars and the emotional side of of physical abuse leaves mental scars.

Verbal abuse can take place in many ways, as in put downs, name calling, minimising or devaluing the thoughts and feelings of another person, screaming, taunts, verbal threats and nagging.

Any form of abuse leaves the victims feeling devalued, they usually lack self worth, self esteem etc.

I think this depends highly on the person. Personally, I can withstand physical abuse and use it as "inspiration" to make myself stronger. However, I never did handle verbal abuse well as I'm emotionally sensitive. This also depends on who does the abusing. If the abuser is highly trusted by the victim, then it adds a sense of betrayal. I think in the long run, psychological abuse is the worst (which can be done physically and verbally) because the mind can make the body react. While a person can beat you, a person can find a way to cope with just a beating. But if you get into the realm of torture... well, very few get over that. And verbal abuse really heads more into the realm of psychological abuse, too. Physical abuse can cause a person to become withdrawn, as someone else hurts them. Verbal abuse can cause a person to hurt themself.

I was abused both physically and mentally most of my life and I must say that mental (verbal) abuse is worse. The bruises and the other injuries heal eventually, but mental scars stay for life.

Verbal-it cannot be seen so not easy to detect. Sometimes physical can be covered but usually detected. Both carry metal scars but verbal are implanted there from the begining.

Although physical abuse is terrible, the scars do heal in time.

Verbal abuse, however, is nigh on to permanent. It destroys the mind and the will.

why worry about which is worse. its not a question of rating any abuse. if you are in an abusive situation there is help for you, no matter where you live. you can not go up to a women who is being beaten by her husband daily and say your abuse is not as bad as the woman who is being yelled and screamed at and riduculed and put down constantly. each person who experiences this is worth so much more then to have to be in that situation. i just use women as a for example. it doesn't matter what age, sex, religion, size, or situation. all is going to affect and devistate that person. if your in an abusive situation, get help. your online now, so look for information in what kind of help their is for you in that area. hotlines, transition homes, counselling, the police. do more then ask a bunch of strangers who you will never meet for help. ask a live person to help you
