In the late 1880s the Honourable William Lane was late for an assignation with a young lady in Haringey Fields on the edge of Tottenham. His horse, Edgar, was having a particularly lazy day and despite his new blinkers was making very slow progress. Billy Lane was getting more and more irritated that his Lady would go off the boil if he didn't get a move on. Passing through Seven Sisters he spotted a blacksmith working by the side of the road "Hey Bobby", said he "can you help me get my horse moving faster?" "No problem Guvner" said Bobby the Smith; I've just got a new apprentice from the Low Countries name of Martyn de Jol who has an invention that could make the difference. "Alan" he calls "get Mr Jol's new heated spur and attach it to the Honourable's boot". At this command Alan GillyZean hovered into view with a spur glowing with white hot heat and fitted it to Mr Lane's boot as instructed.

The Honourable Lane applied the spur to Edgar and immediately shot off down the High Road and was in his Lady's bedchamber in a trice. An hour or so later his tough old heart was being put through the hoops yet again by the lovely Miss Mido - she of the shaven head and the strong thighs. "Forsooth" he said "My heart is as white hot as the Spur that got me here”.....

.... and that is why The Honourable Mr. Lane became forever known as "White Heart Lane" and why the little Mews where his Lady lived soon adopted the name. And why when they founded a Football club a little while later the natural name was Tottenham Hotspur.

after all theyve been through, yes. but there not going to make it. the so called big four clubs are too far ahead, the closest being manchester united and i doubt that tottenham can score that much more points than them for the rest of the season. its unlikely. they may finish 5th and claim the eufa cup spot, which they actually do deserve. the position they are in now doesnt reflect the quality of there team... going on results so far, it looks as though if tottenham were to pull off a miracle and break the top four for the first time since everton, it looks like it will be manchester who would take the fall for them... we have to wait a little more into the season. too early too tell.. the league table shall become a little more clear by christmas, with teams more or less in the positions they will finish :) 18 years, this is the year!!

Medieval England was chock full of people who liked an argument, but Henry 'Harry Hotspur’ Percy pretty much took the top prize. It’s highly likely that he was able to start a fight in an empty room.

The Percys were the uncrowned kings of the north east, and their support was vital to the king in an age when a king ruled only if he had the support of his nobility. Harry 'Hotspur' earned his nickname through his bravery in battle, but mostly because of his tendency to act first and think about it later - if at all.

Hotspur was immortalised by Shakespeare in Henry IV Part One as a charismatic warrior and the hero of the piece - as well as a young contemporary of the 15 year-old Prince Harry. Shakespeare made that part up, as Hotspur was in fact 37 years old at the Battle of Shrewsbury - and already something of a celebrity - He lived in the saddle, had no head for politics, was headstrong and quick to settle a perceived insult with his sword.

Hotspur lived at Warkworth Castle, while his father occupied Alnwick Castle up north.

The Percies had a bit of a name as kingmakers after the revolution of 1399, and the family as a whole was to play an important part in the Wars of the Roses, sponsoring one heir to the throne or another. They were also sworn enimies of the Nevilles, the other major powerbroking family in the north.

Hotspur's name lives on to this day, thanks to Premiership football club Tottenham Hotspur, which is named in his honour.

the reason is simple, as suggested above the Hotspur cricket club was part of the original founding clubs. A couple of boys who were members of Hotspur Cricket Club discussed what to do during the winter as cricket season. Not far from todays headquarter at 748 high road, under the traffic light on the corner of Park Lane, the club was formed by a dozen or so boys in their early teens. They decided to name the club 'Hotspur Football Club'. The date of formation is usually given as 5 September (Tuesday) 1882.

there was another Hotspur football team, London Hotspurs, in fact it was a common victorian name, like rovers, wanderers..ect

In 1882 the Hotspur Football Club was formed by young men from a local grammar school and Hotspur cricket club. It is thought that the name Hotspur was associated with Sir Henry Percy (Sir Harry Hotspur) who lived locally in the 14th Century. The team later became Tottenham Hotspur to distinguish itself from another team called London Hotspur.
