Window washer.....AdAware and the Microsoft Malware catcher could not fix it. Any ideas other then buying a new computer or putting in the restore disk that I have lost?

All of these are ones that I personally use and all are free.

AVG Removes I-Worm/Stration · BackDoor.Generic3.GBB and .GBC · Worm/Generic.FX · Exploit.WMF

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

All those softwares are for spyweares and malwares. Use a virus scanner to scan virus.

You can download a free version of AVG and try detecting the viruses.

Also try doing an online scan at trendmicro.com

There is a free Norton Internet security download on the Yahoo toolbar at the moment...30 day trial period.

You wont need a new computer, and re formatting the computer is the LAST thing you need to do after all else fails.

My computer screwed up last week, and i went to the shops and bought my first antivirus program. It fixed it all up, but since then i have switched the program off because i find them SOO DAMN ANNOYING.

i would say you dont have any anti-virus given that you expect your spyware progrmas to fix a virus?
while adaware is the best option you have it is not a anti-virus program.

you can do a free online virus scan

housecall.trendmicro.com

i would suggest getting a anti-virus program and keeping it updated.
avg seems a popular free program but its detection and performance is lacking.
bit defender, mcafee, or norton will be your best option.
reformating your drive or doing a re-install should be your very last option.

if the recovery cds are lost you can always reorder it. or if your computer is under warranty you can call the tech support you will get it for free.
by the way what brand of computer you have. Some brands like, HP doesnot require recovery cds , all the required data is stored in the hidden partition of it.you just have to press F10 while rebooting the PC and it will prompt you many options.
other wise you can buy a new windows xp and install it.

I suggest that you try to carryout system restore to a day previous to the day when there was no virus. click on start menu, select help and support and select undo changes to my computer using system restore. Select the date suitably. follow the instructions. The problem is likely to be solved. Then,You insatll a standard antivirus soft ware such as Norton, AVG , Avast ( free antivirus software and Ad-aware, Ewido ( free spyware removers). You can download free softwares at

Well it seems that you don't have any anti-virus. Get AVG Free from the following link, update it and run a full system scan:
http://www.download.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10596553.html?tag=lst-0-1

If you already have an anti-virus, update it and run a full system scan. Never keep two antiviruses on a single system because they will fight each other. And always keep the resident shield of AVG active in future.
