You asked a very complex question.
The terrorism that we are seeing today goes back to around the 70s possibly even the 60s.
Basically it was in its early stages right after the Vietnam War. Our country, the USA, was in what is called the 'containment' stage where we were trying to bring down communism. We believed it endangered our capitalist economic structure and decided to go to any extreme to conquer it.
We went as far to supply weapons to B. Laden in his efforts to counter the Russian, communists, invasion of Afghanistan. We also went as far to supply Iran Contra militias with arms in their effort to internally conquer Iran.
But, when Reagan achieved the goal of getting the Soviet Union to convert to capitalism in 1984, we wiped our hands of the promises we had made to all these militia groups.
What we are seeing now is a direct result of some ticked off ppl that we made a lot of promises to that we broke.
That is one part... the rest would take me a book to explain involving imperalism, ignorance and vast movements of propagandaon both sides.

I would say religion and inequality. When the people of a culture feel threatened by or unhappy about something they have the right to retaliate. However they do not have the right to take it out on innocents.
You have to consider that often with terrorism, it is a last desperate act. Its not like in these countries where there is problems in the government everyone feels like they are spoken for in government, and people don't have army's, so they resort to terrorism.

The basic cause of terrorism is a group of fanatics who are determined to take control of the whole planet. They are called the New World Order, and they operate through the secret service departments of most governments, but primarily CIA, MI6, Mossad, and ISI. They know that terrorised people are easy to manipulate, and very prepared to give up their freedoms in return for ill-perceived security.
So the cause of terrorism is power-hunger and greed.

Terrorism is the direct result of the jihadist philosophy of a minority of fundamentalist Muslims who believe they are required to fight the infidels and unbelievers until all the world is united under an Islamic caliphate and Sharia law.
Since we are not Muslims they can do and say anything to us in order to advance their cause. Terror is their most effective weapon. The Wahabi sect of Islam is the primary funder and supporter of the world terror.

Extremism, especially if they find any excuse to fight for some cause. I advise that you read some articles about the post Soviet invasion of Afganistan, how did the Afghan rebels got weapons, money and support and where did Bin Laden got his training. In the end they fought for the cause of Palestine as the Soviet Union collapsed. It'll drive you crazy. What a cruel and an inhumane world we live in. Go to the links I have given below.
