Excellent question!

This is a prime example that I have been trying to get through to ppl whom still believe the media is controlled by the left.

While that used to be true, the media today is controlled very much by the right.

This conversion occurred after a vast behind-the-scenes movement of media legislative changes the Republican controlled Congress completed over 2 years ago.

I agree with Beach Bum's post, and I also agree this is a very good question.

I'd like to add something about the MSM. I think the bias creeps in mostly at the level of the editors, not the reporters. Another factor is the vast and persistent PR machine of the Republican party, which includes numerous think tankers and paid bloggers as well as right wingnut radio and Fox News. They've all been howling and whining about Pelosi becoming Speaker for months, and they expended a lot of effort recently publicizing Murtha's shady, but legal, dealings. Reporters are influenced by the PR brouhaha, they pick up the vibrations, contact the numerous and readily available "sources" and then write. The conservative Republican editors, encourage or suggest these stories, then edit them in a way which is weighted toward the Republican view.

Maybe it's because the brouhaha between the two liberals is more newsworthy than a former Republican leader returning to a leadership role. Face it, Lott should never have been removed for pointing out that Strom Thurmond was a legend in Congress, because he was a legend. Not a particularly good one, but a legend none the less if for no other reason than his seniority. If someone is going to be villified for supporting unsavory characters why have none of the Democrats who support Robert (KKK) Byrd or the admitted pedophile Gerry Studds been demoted or removed? Now you have a Democrat who was impeached and removed as a Federal Judge because he was openly soliciting bribes, and Pelosi want's to make him chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. Pelosi should not be allowed to become Speaker of the House.

Beach bum you disappoint me spouting such rubbish! While I am not one of the conservatives that believes in a liberal democrat control of the media directly. Study after study has shown a majority of the journalist are liberally minded and this by nature is reflected in the stories they report. The charge is not conspiracy but bias.
A1989 survey of of Washington bureau chiefs
89% are Democrats
56% identified themselves as liberal
72% Identified themselves as liberal to moderate
1992 survey
92% were registered Democrats
2001 survey
88% were Democrats
Do you see a consistent trend here?
You say that this trend has changed in the last two yrs. and i would agree with you that the bias is much less overt and that many outlets have made a greater effort in exposing conservative counterpoints. this is most reflected in the televised medium. I think this phenomena is more reflective of 2 things
1. the conscious awareness on the part of the media of the right wing bluster on this subject
2.The chilling effect on the more activist members in news rooms, mostly producers and and editors, that the whole Dan Rather incident had.
These facts however do not change the basic predisposition of like minds to think alike and the overwhelming majority of journalist in Washington are Democrats

I laughed so hard I almost peed my pants. The conservatives in charge of the media?! That is a rich one, right on a par with most of the rest of the conspiracy theories. What was really a screamer though was Nancy's desperate (and largely unsuccessful) attempt to maintain a convincing smile at the announcement session.
Go Moderates! Rein in those wackos, and the dems might have a chance in 2008!
