the red wires in the toaster are the heating elements and are directly connected to the power plug ( which in the US is 120 volts)

WOULD YOU PUT THE KNIFE IN THE OUTLET WALL NO BECAUSE IT HAS ELECTRICITY THE SAME WITH THE KNIFE IN THE TOASTER.

your knive is metal and metal conducts electricity and the heating elements are a source of that electricity which flows from the wall socket to the element to the knive to you hand, ouch!
