OK - I'm not going to be pedantic and explain the differences between autobiography and biography, becuase I understand what you mean and I agree entirely with what you are saying.

There are laws of defamation etc which are supposed to protect people against those who would write "unauthorised biographies" which condemn their subjects. The onus is then on the innocent party to take action against the so-called biographer to clear their name.

It can and does get rather more complicated than this however. If it is adjudged that the information is true and its exposure is in the "public interest", then the defendant will have difficulty in stopping the information being published.

There is only one real way for this to be stopped and that is something we could all contribute to. If we all refused to buy these books, or boycotted newspapers that printed defamatory articles then, without the money to make it worth the risk in publishing, it would all grind to a halt.

Sadly, many of us are so interested in gossip (whether true or false) or caught up in the cult of celebrity, that I cannot see an end to it without preventing our basic right of free speech.

The other two answers are correct 'auto' referring to self. However, your question is about the derogatory nature of some books. The truth is, you DON'T need permission to write about someone. You can print lies, because you could be sued for slander, but, providing you have a loose grasp of facts, judgment cah allow you to write what you want. The 'authorized' means that the subject has given his/her permission for a book to be written about them, 'unauthorized' means it hasn't. One would hope that to go the lengthy process of writing a book, the author would only undertake the task if he had a love or fascination with his subject. I would stear clear of thin volumes on stars of sportsmen under the age of 40, as these are hastily written money spinners, and are little more than extended C.V.'s. One of the most interesting that I read was 'The Life and Death of Peter Sellers' by Roger Lewis. Half way through the tone shifts from one of admiration to one of pity. I think the more research Lewis uncovered the more he disliked his hero. Very interesting!!! Good Question!

No if you are writing about someone elses life you are writing a biography ,If you are writing about your own life you are writting an autobiography
If writing a biographical account of someones life you are mearly rercording the facts of the individuals life ,you should be purly objective and write with neither a critical view nor should your book praise the individual .

The word autobiography means that it is self written.
I think what you mean is a biography, which is written by someone else.
