my best from the US is:

1. AA
2. British Airlines
3. Swiss air
4. Alitalia

I also dislike Lufthansa....

I travel twice a year to Europe so have seen them all....

There is not an ultimate best airline but there is a good airline for the occasion.

For example if you are looking for affordable tickets your list would be something like

1. Ryanair
2. Easyjet
3. German Wings
4. Air Berlin

It is also important which country you are traveling to. But in my experience the following airlines offer very good service.

KLM, Turkish, Lufthansa (although they lost my luggage once), SAS, SN Brussels

I would recommend to make a combined fare search on the following sites:

www.kayak.com
www.expedia.com

Lufthansa is the best airlines for travelling to europe. But rates will be high. Second Emirates also will be nominal one.

Olympic Airways. I think Greek airways is the safest from all, Greek pilots are well educated, in general they have not delayted flights and the tickets are quite cheap.

Lufthansa, their business class has the best seats, and the WiFi is free!
