I know HL2 requires internet access to validate the installation and to download updates. But they both have single player content that you can play offline. Your friend will have to give you his Steam account info, because his CD key is tied to that account. Install the games somewhere where you have net access then you should be set.

Half Life 2 requires an internet connection to validate that the game is legitimate and not a dodgy copy. Once its done (which took a couple hours the first time I installed it) you can play both offline and (the only game I have that does) it works without the disc. However, you have to register the game and install a Steam account (Steam is the software through which HL2 validates). Because your friend has already done this, you'd have to effectively log in as him to install the game, or it'll lock up.

Quake 4 has no such restrictions, you don't need to connect to the net unless you intend to play online.

The only concern I'd send your way is that not many laptops can handle these two games, and even if it does, it won't be particularly pretty.

Hi,
get QUAKE III Arena for free here: http://bitly.com/1p0CwDu

Team Arena is powered by an improved version of the powerful Quake III graphics engine, and despite that the engine itself was released last year, it looks excellent.
It's amazing.

The above is right, however there is a way round Steam.
Just turn off the automatic updates and you'll be fine :)

If you run into any trouble pop into http://www.halflife2.net/ and ask there.

HTH.
