Bow tie

It used to to be that bow ties meant formal (or studious men) and straight ties meant professional (or serious males). But now, because of our new fashion statements, self- expression is acceptable most anywhere.

I understand your quandary. Here's what I recommend:

If you are planning to attend a formal affair and don't know what to wear (neck-wise, that is), consider the AVERAGE AGE of the group scheduled to be present.

If the majority of the people there will be of a younger jet set, either neck-wear will do. If the audience in attendance is of a more mature (or elderly) crowd, then by all means, wear a bow tie.

COLORS:
Black, Red or White is universally accepted for bow ties.

White, silver, or black straight ties are recognized as formal-wear. Wearing a SILK straight tie that exactly matches the color of your shirt is acceptable as formal attire nowadays.

A rare question for today's man... sounds like a great event is coming... ENJOY!

Thanks for writing and Good Luck to you!

I know Hollywood has been showing some straight ties for Black Tie events, but they generally razz them the next day, so go with the bow tie.

If your are worried, take the other tie in your coat pocket to change into if you need to. No harm, no foul.

It is formal! But keep this in mind, take both, one you adjust inside your coat pocket. Then you are set no matter which way it turns out. Too, you can always take the tie/s off if the occasion allows.

Worse is when you come without a tie and one is required.

Always be prepared!
