We often make assumptions or "judge a book by its cover" based on information we have filed mentally.
For example, let's say you see a person at work who never smiles, is always frowning and never has anything good to say about anything. "Grumpy" is the label we have typecast on that individual to the characteristics they've displayed.
The same would appear for someone who is always cheery, smiling and happy. If someone told us that this person had committed some act of "nastiness" in the workplace, we would hardly believe it due to the mental file we had in place for that person. If the same was told of Grumpy, whether he did it or not, we would believe it.
Have you ever read "Fear of Flying" by Erica Jong? It is NOT a book about the fears of flying and possible solutions to resolve that phobia. :)
The old saying has always been, "You can't judge a book by its cover."

"Looks" are the first thing that one notices in others. A person comments about others based on his/her past experiences and ends up saying "ohh that person is like this ... n this person is like ..." It's only when you start interacting with that person, you will be able to modify/change your initial perspective. A cute looking person may not have a cute character, a not-so good looking person could be extremely decent. It's basically how you see others - Perspective is thy name!
