I have been reading whatever I can get my hands on that gives any answers to this question for several decades. Because this is a metaphysical question, our current sciences, which are based only upon physics, cannot address it.
The answers I have found, therefore, come mainly from esoteric writings. They might be briefly explained as follows:
There are numerous planets -- and even numerous dimensions -- within creation. The Earth is just one inhabited planet in the physical dimension.
Our purpose while living on this planet is:
1. To experience things,
2. To learn to respect and extend compassion to our fellow human beings.
3. To appreciate all living things, and even non-living things, that we share this world with.
4. To have an opportunity to correct mistakes we have made in other lifetimes.

we r the ones with purpose...
n our purposes varies from something as trivial as losing losing weight to something as paramount as making a difference in the world...
all said n done its our purposes that make this world purposeful or purposeless...

Just happens to be a sequence of events.
Every one in it be it an insect or a man, takes birth, dies!
No soul, no God, nothing at all. This all will be repeated on another planet after mankind demolishes Earth.

That is the perpetual question. Not anyone has yet answered it completely and satisfactorily. But for me, we are here in this world to be able to love people.
