Firstly being an addict is an illness and not a choice, it could happen to you or anyone in your family. Secondly Incapacity Benefit is for people who are unfit for work and therefore need to be supported. To be regarded as unfit for work a claiminat requires 15 points from a physcial health test or 10 points from a mental health test. addiction issues only awards 2 points, so people claiming are likely to have far more issues than just their addictions (perhaps that why they became addicted in the first place). You have a silly narrow minded point of view and aren't even aware of the basic facts before commenting.

For all those who say addiction is an illness...it starts with a life choice!

We are able to choose to take up alcohol and drugs...some people take these choices to extremes, and we as tax payers pick up the bills either through the benefits, justice systems or health services.

As a country that offers freedom of choice and of speech, then if what one person calls an illness is ok...then if another calls it scrounging...that should be acceptable too!

So to question the governemnts actions to pay incapacity benefit to people who choose to abuse their body in my view is perfectly reasonable, when the same government allows hospitals to close down and prisons to become overcrowded, then pay convicted drug abusers for having to 'endure' cold turkey!!!

It's about an alcoholic or a drug addict being unable to work so they are entitled to a benefit. Do you view dependancy as a choice because for many it is an illness.
There will always be scroungers that will try and claim whatever benefit they can.

This is disgusting because their "illness" is self-inflicted and there are people who genuinely need incapacity benefits that are turned down.
No drug addict or Alcoholic should be classed as unfit to work and,the only reason they do not work is because as long as they get enough for their next bottle or fix they are happy and,its down to us to foot the bill.

Makes me furious! I think normal benefit is about £57 a week and many mums are having to struggle on this and my brother is living rent free because it is all paid for him, his bills must be minimum, he doesn't look like he eats much so his food bill must almost none existent, he has no children to feed and clothe and he gets about £100 a week to pay for his cheap cider that makes him a violent and nasty man. I just don't get it. Why isn't his money cut down to the minimum to stop his drinking getting out of hand? I was fuming when he ended up in hospital through the drink and I sorted his money out for him and saw how much he got. That's more than a weeks work for me when you add up all the other things he gets like housing benefit. They pay for him to get taxis to and from the hospital as well. It's a complete joke.

I suppose it's the idiotic government idea that if they give money to alcoholics and drug users it keeps the crime figures down.A sort of "pocket money" to buy drink/drugs,that us mugs(taxpayers) pay for.Too much help is given to junkies and not enough help to it's victims.
