Yes they did, and quite frequently. In fact it happened in both world wars, the initial contact between the German and British fleets leading to the battle of Jutland (WWI) was due to a German destroyer searching a trawler (I forget from which neutral nation), if it had been from an opposing nation they would have sunk it. Germany had a limited number of ships abroad at the start of WWII, but those that sailed from Baltic ports played havoc on Russian fishing. Frequently fishing vessels found themselves attacked by the German E-Boats (gunboats not much different in concept from the US PT-boats) that patrolled the coasts of conquered nations. U-boats (subs) that found isolated fishing vessels would surface near and fire their deck guns (20mm Anti-air guns and/or 88mm cannons) rather than waste the limited torpedoes (which might pass to deep to strike a minor vessel). Do remember that fishing boats were used to clandestinely deliver commandos, spot naval activity, and a host of other actions. Also the Germans were not the only ones who sank fishing craft out of hand. The Brits, French and Russians, as well as about all the combatants knocked off fishing boats. The US sank at least one fishing boat as the Doolittle Raiders approached Japan, but launched planes much earlier than planned because they feared the fishing boat may have radioed a warning home. It seems to have been a common practice. Hope this helped you, and good luck.

To a certain extent, yes. The British operated intelligence gathering boats ("Q" boats) which were disguised as fishing trawlers & were armed.

The Germans were most likely trying to sink these boats & some real fishing boats were sunk as a result.

I`ve no idea but you would have to be INSANE to be out in a fishing boat knowing a german Uboat might be under you. And these were surposed to be the good old days War, Ration books and Ricketts.

There was a German sub maurading off the entrance to NY Harbor, they sunk many fishing boats at night, the sub-itself was sunk off Long Island after it torpedo'd a British "Korvette" in the area, both ships are charted on the map off "East Rockaway" inlet. I've seen german films of the "Belt" Pkwy in Brooklyn during a "Brown out", and a German sailor once told me that they surfaced at night to view the lights of "Manhattan" Island, I asked if he was scared, he said "Yes", and was glad to get the Hell out of there. German subs were EVERYWHERE !

No one really likes to talk about it, but yes, from old timers stories, I believe so.
The Germans were sinking anything that might be carrying anything that could support the war, such as ammo. They had no respect for life, humans on fishing boats, ocean liners, supply ships.etc. The lives of innocents ment nothing to them or other enemies of their cause, the axis as it was called.
Bastards.
