- Your job situation. You can't force employers to hire you. For instance, I graduated from high school with a 95 average, graduated from university with a 3.5 GPA, worked part-time jobs, interned during my final semester, invested tens of thousands of dollars, and applied to 126 companies and counting... and haven't even been on one interview! Not one!

- How others treat you. You can't force anybody to be your friend and you can't force girls to like you. Growing up, I was called every name in the book, put down, ganged up on, jumped, slammed into lockers and cars by people older and bigger than me, challenged to fights out of nowhere, treated like sh!t for no reason, shunned, and rejected constantly. Yet, I'm told to "stop complaining, deal with the abuse, and smile."

You can't control everything that happens in your life, but you can control how you deal with it, how you let it effect you and what attitude you will have.

I was abused throughout my childhood. I couldn't control that. What I can control is how I deal with it now and whether and in which ways I let that experience effect me and my life. I have those options to choose between:

A) I can give up, let my experience make me miserable forever and let it ruin my whole life. I can sit around feeling sorry for myself and being angry at the world and never do anything with my life. I can focus on the emotional scars and mental problems that I have as a resault of the abuse.

B) I can try to make the best of my life, try to deal with the memories and put the anger behind me and move on. I can use my experience in a positive way, for example to help others. I can focus on how the experience made me a stronger, more understanding and more helpful person.

I chose the latter. I agree that life is what you make it. It's your attitude that matters and that can make you or break you. I could have made it like A, but I chose to make it like B. I can't control what other people did to me, but I can control how I'm going to deal with it. I'm not going to let people ruin my life. It's MY life. They can try to break me down, but they can't, I won't let them. I'm going to do my best to overcome whatever problems that will come my way and try to live a good life despite the bad experiences. That's how life is what you make it.

I understand what you're coming from, but despite your situation, you're still more fortunate that a lot of people in the world. You graduated college and did great in it. While some people can't appreciate who you are, there are those who do. You have a chance to appreciate what you do have, and stop looking at what you don't.

They say that "life is what you make it" because you have the choice of how you "see" your life.

Just think, when you've hit rock bottom, there's nowhere to go but up. Things will get better. :)

It seems unlikely to me that you can't find any job in your field of expertise or interest, where you can't gain experience and work your way to the top of your ability? Sometimes applying isn't enough, you have to follow up, or maybe you need resume help, or to start lower like I said?

It's too bad those things happened to you as a youth, and that no one stood up for you, and no justice was obtained by notifying the police, and you weren't able to escape or stand up for yourself. But you can still overcome it all. Just keep moving forward.

I think what can be controlled is attitude. You can let an @sshole ruin your day, or you can let it run off your back.
Naturally, this does not apply to all situations, such as the examples you described, it can be difficult or even impossible to feel anything but crappy, but when you CAN control your attitude, it can make a lot of difference.

"Life is what you make it" is a very broad statement. The situation that you're unhappy about, what will you make of it? See what I mean.
