I usually break it with my teeth.
After it is cooked, it'll be easier to remove the shell.
But because of the difference of its species, some kind is easy to remove, but others not.

Make a knife cut in them and boil them in a saucepan. Then you can pick the shells off from the split in the nut.

hit it lightly with a rock or hammer. we use to play with those when we were kids. have you ever stepped on them barefoot? ouch.
