In general, yes we could say them Heavy metal bands, Why ? Because some of them are the big fans in heavy metal music, so in their music the heavy metal music will be their root. And some of them we can figure as a inventor of heavy metal music, they are the "father" of heavy metal music in general.

AC DC - An aussie hard rock band, that reign the world with their cool rock n roll and hard rock music. They are a legend in hard rock music world, they are also one of hard rock band that influence the world of heavy metal music. Angus guitar's riff is really unbelieveable, sound like simple to follow, but in fact, his riff is really complicated.

Led Zeppelin - They are father for so many metal bands right now, hail from england and then come to america, then they start to conquer the world with their hard rock music. If we ask any metal bands right now, they will answer that this band is what they listen in their younger.

KISS - 70's hard rock band from Usa. What make they are so cool ?? Their performance !!!! No one can compare to them until now. Their show always be so attractive to so many people around the world. This band is a father of heavy metal music also, especially in Glam metal music world.

Deep Purple - Another godfather for heavy metal music. They are hailing from england then conquer the world of hard rock music. They are the best in mixing some classics music with the hard rock music. No one ever done it before. So many amazing musician in this band, Richie is one of the greatest guitarist of all times, Jon shake the world with his keyboard, he is the master in this band, Ian bring his voice to be one of the most amazing voice that people ever heard in this planet and Glenn, a genius musician.

Guns N' Roses - The most famous band in the late 80's metal music scene.

Van Halen - Are there anybody who play guitar in metal music did not know Eddie van halen ?????

Rage Against The Machine - their root is still heavy metal music, they mix it with some cool distortion and well known as an alternative metal band.

I don't consider Van Halen heavy metal, I consider them hard rock. Plus their music was too good to be heavy metal, which to me was more about style than substance.
