Does your coin look the the photos in the PCGS link below? If so, it is a US Mint (Philadelphia) product rather than a California product. It is made primarily of copper rather than gold. Coin Value depends on rarity and condition. In typical heavily circulated condition, an 1855 1/2 cent would retail for about $55. A dealer might pay 60% to 70% of that amount to buy.

California small denomination gold was made in quarter dollar, half dollar and dollar, there is no 1/2 cent. They were made from 1852-1882. They are dated and have the words cents or dollar on them. Many were made for jewelry in the later years and may or may not have a date. There are also a lot of fakes out there, plus pieces made to commemorate something or to be used in modern jewelry.. You need to see a local coin dealer who knows this type item, he will have books on the subject, many dealers don't deal in this type of item. A pro in this field is Donald Kagin his web site is kagins.com.
