I'm looking into buying a Mercedes from the years 1969-1979. If it's been sitting in a garage out of the elements, would it really need alot of work to maintain after all these years?

Hey there it all depends on how well the car was maintained and if its been parked in a garage then chances are it could be in pretty good shape.. but i have seen cars too that have been parked in a garage and need alot of work to get them on the road if your thinking of looking for a car like that it be wise to take someone you know that is either a mechanic or knows alot about cars just so you don't get a bad deal hope all of this helps you out .and good luck

Dr. Dee is right. It may have been out of the elements, but the gas could be old (does it smell like varnish?), the seals dried and shriveled, the oil could look like tar--or the oil could be broken down completely and look like tea. Belts that are brittle, underbody rust (yes it can rust in a garage).
If you are mechanically inclined, and this is not to be a daily driver, but rather a project, I would say go for it. If you need a dependable car to go to work, I would pass this deal up.

machines wear with use and deteriorate with time. fact. cars are machines. if it's been sitting unused for a long time it will have mechanical issues (car dealers used to call this "lot rot"), seals and gaskets "dry out" and crack, electical components suffer from corrosion (even in dry climates), moving parts get sticky... lots of fun stuff, although it may have a rust free body. older cars have been around longer and just naturally have more problems. if you really just have to have this particular vehicle, learn as much as you can about maintaining it yourself, because paying someone else to do everything will break you. in addition to that, finding someone who will work on mercedes and actually knows how can be next to impossible in some parts of the country.

STOP! you are begging for trouble, unless you are wealthy and plan a resto -RUN AWAY! nobody wants to work on those cars in the US (if you are in germany thats different) parts availability is nonexistant -just buy a 4-5 year old accord and call it good!

if it needs maintence and alot of it, perhaps spend the money on upgrading the parts and keeping the skin... Im not a car fan or anything by the way s i dont know the terminology.. However I thought I had a good idea

Only if it has not been started in a long time. If you do not start them and let them run once every two weeks, they can rust internally and the gaskets will dry out and crack!

Yes, it could cost a couple of thousand just to put it on the road.

it would depend on what kind of care it has had and how many miles and the type of miles. nice miles or not so nice. most older cars all have some degree of up keep.
