Microchipping is becoming more popular in the equine circles... then there is always branding (both hot and freeze brands can be used).

Purebred associations are doing DNA profiles, also.

If it is registered by a specific breed's registry, the name of the owner is on the papers. If not registered, maybe a bill of sale, but it could be harder to prove if the horse is unregistered.
