I also have a PC that uses a cable modem for Internet access. Does it matter what wireless router I buy? I made a mistake today not knowing that the laptop already had a wireless card installed, and purchased a wireless router with a smart card that inserts into a laptop. I didn't need it, and my laptop doesn't support those cards. So, I guess I just need a wireless router. Are they all compatible with cable modems? Are they all compatible with wireless network cards in laptops? What should I look for?

As long as the wireless router you buy supports 802.11(b) and 802.11(g), you'll almost certainly be able to use it with the computers you have in your house.

As far as connecting to the cable modem, again almost any wireless router and almost any cable modem will connect to each other using an ethernet connection over CAT(5) cable - that's the one that looks like an overgrown phone cord. There's a small chance your cable modem currently connects to your computer with USB, but it should still have an ethernet option, also.

Alll in all, this should be an easy one- go buy whatever wireless router Best Buy or CompUSA has on sale!

One last thing to look for, if your PC doesn't have a wireless card, you'll either want to buy a wireless router that also has ethernet connections to connect directly to the PC (there are some that don't have that, like Airport Express), or buy a USB WiFi adapter for the PC.

Lol, easy... yes they are all compatible with cable modems and nearly all wireless routers are good for wireless network cards. And what to look for.. well that depends on your home... you are in a very easy situation, with technoligy as it is today, basicly if you hook any wireless router up to your internet 80 times out of 100 it works... and if it does not, make sure that your laptop is in range of the router... i dont know how good the card in your PC is but some times it gets in to this mode were it says that it is connected, but you cant open any web pages or email, ect... simply go in to "networks in range" and disconnect then reconnect to the internet again. I hope that this has helped, if not or you want more advise please add me to your msn contact list. GameMaker2006@hotmail.com i am very good with the computer and might beable to help you out.

Laptop with Wirless network means u need to configure that laptop with a wireless router, which can be used in a limited area, Its called WiFi zone. Wirless routers can be compatible with cable modem if it is having Ethernet port onit.

There are issues you will desire to purchase, yet rather your no longer increasing any sign strenght, you increasing the quantity of the sign that your computing device selections up :) There are antennas, yet maximum would desire to plug right into a thingy which you wouldnt have on your computing device card. i don't comprehend what your computing device at the instant has, yet i anticipate you're utilising a sort of enjoying cards that is going in the mini pci slot (on the backside of computing device). if so, you will desire to advance sign power by utilising procuring a mimo technologies on the spot PCMCIA slot on the spot card. And that antenna which you linked does not be a stable theory. that's a non directional antenna, as in it does not be as efficient according to cost as a directional antenna (of direction non directionals are stable for issues like routers that hook up with countless issues). and finally, isps have policies against sharing information superhighway connections between residences which you compromise to by utilising utilising their service, so there remains stealing happening there.
