how do they know it's time to seek shelter, and where do they go if there's no shelter around?

They chase them, mostly, not run from them. These guys are taking risks to get more information to save lives. They know what they are doing. Some of them get hurt from time to time.

Proper chasers only get so close to the tornado.

As a general rule, a half a mile or farther is considered appropriate. Many feel a mile is better.

I chase in the upper & at times central midwest (MN, WI, IL, Iowa, SD, ND, OK, NE etc).

Lightning, large hail and straight line winds are actually more of a danger to most chasers. Only amateurs & yahoos drive right up (intentionally) to a funnel.

They don't drive into the funnel as a general rule. They do not get in front of the path of the funnel, and if the vehicle starts to rock or lift dangerously it is time to go another direction.

theyre riding behind the tornado and have also developed an eye to 'know' where the tornado will go next by reading it.
