So I just purchased a 740il and was wondering how often does the oil need to be changed?sounds like a stupid question, but the owners manual does not help. I found online that the 1998 740il can use the synthetic oil that lasts somewhere in the range of 15,000 miles. also how accurate is the oil service indicator? i have put 2,500 miles on the car so far and the indicator has moved up either 1 or 2 marks in the yellow range of the indicator sensor. If i change the oil myself is there any alternative oil to genuine BMW oil that is just as good? how much would you estimate the dealership charges for the oil change??? also do you know a price range of supplies if i do it myself? thanks to whomever answers.Also.i found out that BMW is covering Pixel problems after the warranty is expired for the display above the steering column.(Enterprise Motorcars in Appleton WI quoted me $800 to fix this problem and i searched online and found a solution. I paid warranty hourly rate for $49 parts free

Change oil as indicated by sensor unless your vehicle is alternatively fueled.

Your BMW requires synthetic oil of the correct SAE grade and minimum API service code. The grade is the oil weight such as 10w 40 and the service code is often just a letter or two such as SF or G. Any synthetic oil of the correct grade which meets or exceeds the required service code is sufficient. The best possible oil for it would be Royal Purple available at Napa Dealers and elsewhere.

To better understand the oil change situation with your vehicle you should realize that full synthetic oil does not break-down as quickly as conventional oil. Even average synthetic oil can maintain its specified lubrication quality to 30K miles. The ONLY reason for you to change oil prior to this is because it is contaminated, yeah the black stuff. For this reason the sensor is ideal for your situation.

Preferably, use the TIS instructions... Go to TIS, Vehicle Identification (7 E38/740 iLsedan/M62/1995). Page right, click Document/Repair Instructions/Automatic Transmissions/Transmission Assembly/Oil change A5s310Z/ then page right. This is for the procedure. For the right type of oil, after Vehicle ID, click Operating Fluids/ Automatic Transmissions/A5s310 Have Fun !
