we have evolved(of were created - whatever your belief) this way for ease of gripping things. If all digits were straight, grasping things (say food, implements or the like) would be much more difficult

It improves our ability to accomplish different tasks. If all our fingers were the same we'd have a much harder time doing a lot of things. Just try picking your nose with your thumb sometime!

so you can perform your daily multiple tasks, as an example, think what typing on keyboard would be if your fingers where all at the same length.

so we can hold stuff better.. plus it looks better.. just imagine if your thumb and pinky were al the size of your middle finger.. it would just be wierd ..to me at least..
