What is the "gambit system" in Final Fantasy XII?

for those of you who have played it, what exactly does it do (or what exactly is it?)

Gambits allow you to give actions to your characters with out haveing to give them actions each round. The combat system is more free form than turn based int eh game and it actually works very weel.

Basic Gambit:

If A than I will do B

or

Foe: Targeting Leader: Attack
Ally: HP>70%: Potion

And you can have multiple Gambits going, I think I have one character with 8 possible at the moment. You have to be careful usign Gambits though as you can burn through MP or an item really quickly if you are not careful and that could leave you in a bad spot, but as you can change Gambits at any time, you can always turn one off that is causing problems
