Because depression is an illness that cant be seen. If someone had a broken leg or no legs at all they would have some kind of empathy for them but people who suffer from deep depression dont have physical symtoms that people can see. Unless someone has experienced severe depression they should consider themselves blessed. It is hell.

Ignorance. People don't know what depressed people are going through. Few people know much about depression and nobody understands what depression is like until they experience it first hand. They think depressed people are just weak losers who feel sorry for themselves and don't do anything to get better. That is a major misconception.

Also, for some reason people tend to look down on mentally ill people in general and think that they're weak, stupid and/or completely coo-coo. That also is ignorance and I guess the reason people assume this stuff is because mental illnesses are in the brain and people think that if something is wrong with the brain people can hardly be intelligent.

That's the idea you odn't know what depressed people are going through...depression isn't just sad or moody. It's a chemical imbalance in the brain and the brain funcitons differently. That feeling of sad and moody and anger, etc. that you get once in a while...it's how we, depressed people, feel all the time. Just imagine crying over absolutely nothing or feeling that you're worthless and you have no control over those feelings. We're looked at as weak b/c we can't control those types of emotions. For those who are suicidal there's no way of controling it without treatment. We need treatment...it's not just something that goes away on its own. Feelings of depression with someone who's not clinically depressed can go away on their own, but not for someone who is clinically depressed.

For the same reason that people who wear black always seem to be 'dark' to everyone. No one really wants to get to the bottom of people's emotions anymore. People judge too quickly is what it comes to. I have a friend who was depressed once, and she is one of the strongest people I know because she survived her depression, and trust me, she had good reasons to be depressed. It's sad, but the reason is that people like to stereotype and judge people before getting to know them.

I think it's fear. Putting a person down for being depressed may make them feel protected against the possibility it could come upon them as well. A depressed person needs love, encouragement and compassion.
