Absolute value:
| a | < b

is the same as:
-b < a < b

In your case:
| ½ - x | < 3

This is the same as:
-3 < ½ - x < 3

Now subtract ½ everywhere:
-3½ < -x < 2½

Multiply through by -1 and reverse the signs (don't forget to do this when multiplying through by a negative number.)

(2-x)(4x-3) = 0 8x -6 -4x^2 +3x = 0 -4x^2 + 11x -6 = 0 It crosses at 2 and three/4. In between that, that's above 0. subsequently your second selection is nice, x<=3/4 or x >= 2
